How to Turn Your Goals into Action: Coaching to Achieve Your Dreams
Throughout my experience working with and coaching C-suite leaders, I have observed a consistent behavior: a strong commitment to defining and achieving meaningful goals. These goals are not mere objectives, such as daily to-do lists or quarterly performance metrics, but significant objectives that have a substantial impact. These leaders recognize that success does not occur by chance. They concentrate on measurable and meaningful outcomes; goal-setting is a disciplined behavior.
I’m discussing this topic today because it’s that time of year when many people reflect on the past and look toward the future. Throughout the month, I am confident that I will answer questions from aspiring leaders and executives who want to sustain their success and expand their influence. I often share the examples below of clients who showed exceptional goal-setting skills in those calls.
Goal Setting as an Engine for Leadership Success
One executive I collaborated with, who led a global organization, exemplified ambitious yet strategic goal-setting. With 12 direct reports, he established approximately 50 clearly defined shared objectives for his team. The result was a cohesive organizational strategy focused on accountability and progress. What stood out was not only the scale of his approach but also the ongoing involvement strategy he developed to empower his executive team to stay aligned. The engagement outcomes mitigated some inefficiencies caused by this approach.
Another executive grounded his goals in the organization’s mission. Every decision and action connected back to the bigger picture, ensuring alignment across the company and accountability to the very purpose they were striving for. This approach pushed decision-making deeper into the organization and fostered a culture of personal accountability. In this framework, measurement was a crucial driver of keeping the organization focused on its mission.
In a different industry, an inspiring senior HR executive consistently motivated her team with three core goals. Her clarity, focus, and consistency served as a guiding beacon, uplifting her entire team day in and day out, year after year. Always on point, she led her team with reliability and excellence, seamlessly aligning annual corporate goals with the relevant situational context.
These executives acknowledged that goal setting involves not just ambition but also clarity, alignment, and execution. As Organization Development pioneer Marv Weisbord noted, two key criteria for organizational purpose are clarity and agreement. Why You Need Coaching for Effective Goal-Setting
Many leaders fall into the trap of thinking they can set powerful goals alone. While motivation is present, refining and aligning goals with actionable plans often requires external guidance. That’s why I never take on coaching clients without a deep exploration of their goals. This process involves going deeper, analyzing the “why” behind each objective, and connecting it with larger goals and personal or professional missions.
One inspiration for today’s article—and perhaps something I should have mentioned earlier—is a caption that runs along the bottom of my secular January 2025 desk calendar. The quote, attributed to Francis of Assisi, perfectly captures the essence of the coaching process with the words, “Start by doing what’s necessary, then do what’s possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” When pursued with intention and rigor, goal-setting can transform what initially feels overwhelming into the achievable—and ultimately, the extraordinary.
The Tangible Benefits of Goal Setting
Practical goals can unlock untapped potential for both leaders and their organizations. They serve as a foundation for strategic planning, drive cultural alignment, and enable individuals to concentrate their energy on the most impactful activities. Here’s what powerful goals provide when combined with meaningful coaching and execution strategies:
- Clarity in Prioritization: Goals help structure the noise, enabling busy executives to focus only on what matters most.
- Enhanced Team Alignment: Shared goals create a culture of accountability, collaboration, and collective ownership.
- Empowerment Through Purpose: When goals are tied to a mission, they drive passion, commitment, and inspiration at all levels of the organization.
- Ongoing Adaptability: Great goals aren’t static. They are adaptable, evolving with business needs while staying rooted in strategic intent.
