In the world of work today, things are changing at hyper-speed. Companies are trying to figure out how to handle teams that work from a distance, especially after COVID-19 shook things up. They're also trying to ensure everyone feels welcome and valued, which means moving away from the boss-in-charge way of doing things to a more decentralized management approach. Quickly adapting is the new reality. This calls for a new way of making teams work together smoothly, ready for whatever comes next, and making sure everyone feels included.

The new normal is akin to trying to run a submarine or send a rocket to space. Teamwork in those situations is intense because you must get everything right, or it could go wrong. You need spot-on communication, total trust, and everyone doing their part. There's no room for error; everyone must know their roles and responsibilities.

This article is about turning regular groups into extraordinary teams that perform well and stick together through thick and thin. We'll explore how to make teams click and keep them moving in the right direction for the long haul.

Organization Development (OD), one of my fields of endeavor, is a game-changer in making this happen. It's all about changing the workplace culture so the company can face new challenges without losing what makes it unique. OD focuses on helping the company grow, stay true to its values, and be ready to tackle new problems. This means ensuring teams are not just thrown together but always getting better, learning, and staying in sync with what the company wants to achieve. Bringing OD into how teams are built is critical to ensuring they're ready to adapt, respond to new things, and align with the company's big-picture goals, setting the stage for real success in today's business world.

Rethinking the Imperative of Teamwork

In the 'new normal' of business, teams have transcended traditional boundaries and emerged as the linchpin of organizational success. Despite the rapid technological advancements and the shift towards remote work, the importance of teamwork has not diminished; it has, in fact, been underscored. Teams are the catalysts of innovation within organizations, pooling collective expertise and diverse perspectives to foster breakthroughs that individual efforts could not achieve. Today, when there is something new almost daily, it's easy to want everything to change immediately. This slow and steady approach helps teams and cultures grow stronger and stick together through ups and downs, setting everyone up for lasting success.

Echoing Peter Senge's sentiments, organizations must see themselves as dynamic learning systems. In such environments, knowledge is acquired and stored and continuously created through experiences. This perspective champions active learning as the driving force behind organizational and team development, where mistakes are viewed as opportunities for learning and growth. Constructive feedback becomes a tool for improvement, fostering an atmosphere where continuous development is encouraged and valued.

Furthermore, the allure of immediate results, often glorified, starkly contrasts the patience required for meaningful team and organization development. Skipping the essential stages of team formation, including the challenging phases of storming and norming, can impede actual growth. The patience to persevere through these stages, fostering understanding and alignment, distinguishes successful teams from their counterparts. In this context, patience is more than a virtue; it is a strategic necessity that paves the way for durable success and resilience.

Insights from Evolving, Strengthening, and Expanding Teams

Working closely with executive teams on strategic imperatives has provided me with profound insights into the intricacies of team development. Here are seven key learnings that have become foundational in my approach to cultivating high-performing teams:

My experiences have underscored the importance of these principles in building and sustaining effective teams. A commitment to fostering communication, alignment, individual recognition, shared experiences, perpetual learning, celebration of achievements, and a global perspective are not merely best practices—they're imperatives for anyone looking to develop genuinely cohesive and high-performing teams.
